Her painting achieve the maximum feasible realism while evoking the classics. Her men and women belong by conceptual imperative to Classical Greece, but their feeling are those of present-day people.Her painting searches for the transcendental in the human spirit and connects with the eagerness of different generations to find the surviving idea. However, she doesn't take refuge in the past but rather in what most current without getting caught in the anecdotal. She tries to establish-and in my view succeeds-the supremacy of thought that survives the fleeting beauty of figures and forms.The painter has available to her an excellent technical education, but she does not take refuge in it either. She could do so, and it would not be questionable in itself, however, such limitations would prevent her from expressing herself with the freedom she currently does.On the contrary, she uses her knowledge and training to enjoy her own freedom in representing figures who, although concentrated in their own thoughts, are in harmony with those around them. She captures, therefore, the diversity and unity of people in the society to which we belong from our earliest beginnings. I consider Montse Valdes an important painter.JOSEP M.
